Study: Women are Chronic Shopaholics during Sales Season
Monday, December 27, 2010

I do agree with this article to a certain extent as it does not apply to all women. The article mentioned about young, single women in Austria who are "shopaholics". However, I feel that such a statement may not solely refer to Austrian women, but also includes women from other parts of the world.

Studies have shown that the ages of these women usually lie below 30 years old, comprising of teenagers as well. Thus, women with either no income or low income still have the tendency to spend their money on shopping- clothes, shoes and bags etc. This has recently become a phenomenon, which brings out growing concerns about this issue.

Online shopping is as popular as shopping in malls. It seems like shopping has become a hobby. Especially during sales season, young women are very much willing to spend their money on shopping. Sales, discounts and offers do not occur frequently, thus, it seems fine to spend more during such periods.

Compulsive shopping may turn out to be a unpredictable disorder. To avoid an increase in the number of compulsive shoppers, it is encouraged that young people be educated about the benefits of spending their money wisely and not chalking up unnecessary debts for their parents or themselves. Nowadays, buying on credit seems so simple as items purchased are temporarily "free". Despite so, it can be a headache when the bill arrives at month end.

Young people may be inculcated with the thought that buying branded goods is a form of achieving social status, proving that one has the ability to afford and to show off to others.

To conclude, shopping is fine and but there may be dire consequences in the case of shopping addiction. Thus, one should think twice before spending money on unnecessary/branded goods which may possibly be a waste of money.
