Workers with mental disabilities usually experience a tougher time finding suitable jobs compared to others. Still, they work dilligently to earn a living. However, not every employer is willing to accept such a worker if a candidate can be found to do the job better although the same wage is paid. Regardless of the difference in work efficiency, the society should learn to accept mentally disabled workers which helps them to carry on their lives well.
As stated in the article, two factories in Jinan, capital of East China's Shandong province, were found to have employed 8 mentally disabled workers. Upon reading the article, I was quite touched that the employers were willing to accept those workers despite their disability.
Although the 8 workers may not have been paid, the owner was kind enough to pay for their food expenses and to take care of their accommodation. Honestly speaking, it is rare to find such a caring employer and I really admire her for that. The fact that she takes in mentally disabled workers shows her sympathy for them by lending a helping hand to improve their lives. It was mentioned that 4 workers were previously vagrants before they were hired.
Still, this is only 1 example. There are definitely such workers around. It is difficult to determine if their employers have been treating them well. Employers will receive servere punishment if slavery-like practices or torture are found to take place in factories. I strongly agree to such a law. Mentally disabled workers have their human rights as well. Thus, there is no reason for them to either be enslaved or abused.
Employers are encouraged to hire workers with mental disabilities. If trained, they would be able to contribute and possibly perform their work well. Why not give them a chance? We should not discriminate people just because of their lower mental abilities. Instead, they should treated equally like the rest.
To me, I am glad that employers have the heart to empathise.
