I believe that most of us have been tested on the spelling of some difficult words during our primary school education. Do we really remember how to spell it after the test? Basically it depends on how often we will come across those words. Read more, and you will learn more.

However as mention in the video, people are pondering about the need to memorise the spelling when they can just google or search online dictionaries for the correct spelling. This shows that many of us are overly dependent on the technologies that are widely available to us.

Certainly, the frequent use of Singlish is one of the causes why Singaporeans are bad at spelling. In addition, most of us tend to type in short forms instead of spelling out the whole word.

Singapore government created the Speak Good English Movement, citing the need for Singaporeans to be able to effectively communicate with the other English users in the world. Since writing is a form of communicating, thus there is a need to encourage good spelling. I think that it may be useful if Singapore government create some related campaigns to enhance our ability in spelling.
